The Scream – poem by Issa Dioume

THE SCREAM

Swindled by an invisible thief
My friend did go off the reef
His tears toppled alongside him
Into the ocean, over the scene
And now, ice-cream
Cold, unfeeling ice-cream
Balls up inside my throat
Refusing to get out,
Refusing to let out,
Never melting.

  1. I have read this over a few times and I’m not sure I get it, but I like it. It’s a little dark, a little funny and definitely has me thinking about how it can be interpreted and what you intended. I feel like that may have been your intent. Nice work.

  2. Yes, exactly. the ice-cream is a homophone for I scream. I imagined a character who experienced the pain of losing someone, but refused to face his pain, his scream, and so it stays stuck in his throat, not allowing him to breathe, for it never melts, never relents, despite the character trying to keep it down.
The intention is indeed for it to be humorous and confounding. 🙂
